our dog tate is a fiend for dog ice cream. it can be twenty below outside and he still loses his mind when you open the freezer door. tate's ice cream of choice, frosty paws, can be bought right in the freezer aisle next to the people ice cream. the problem is that his dessert fix is both expensive and contains some unnatural ingredients. our fix for this...make our own frozen tate treat. the result... four paws up.
there are many doggie ice cream recipes you can find when scouring the web, but what i like about this one is the addition of pumpkin. pumpkin has many health benefits for our four-legged friends including aiding with digestive health, weight loss benefits, and supporting urinary health. you can read more about the health benefits here. this recipe does have dairy in it, which we know isn't always the greatest for our pups. however, yogurt contains much less lactase than regular milk and the live cultures can be good for a pup's digestive system. win, win. disclaimer: i am not a veterinarian and i don't play one on tv.

ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 2 cups non-fat, unsweetened plain yogurt
- 3 tablespoons natural peanut butter
- 1 cup organic pumpkin puree (not the pie filling!!)
- 5 oz. paper cups
directions
put all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. pour mixture into paper cups and rest flat in the freezer. allow ice cream to freeze for 5-7 hours. once frozen, store treats in a dated freezer bag.
makes about 10 ice cream treats.

Athena's had 18 months of UTI's/trips to the vet/antibiotics/5 urine cultures, 2 months of peeing blood, a trip to an internal medicine specialist, two ultrasounds, an ob/gyn exam (I can't make this up), a diagnosis of a kidney stone, and a surgery to remove it. Needless to say, this girl is on a serious budget. But B and A love their ice cream and I love to spoil. I made your ice cream last night and they pretty much housed it tonight. Bear even showed me his teeth and snarled (naughty) when I took the cup to rip down the paper. Added bonus is that pumpkin isn't supposed to taste good after it's been pooped out and since Athena still likes to dine on shit like it's the best scooby snack ever, if I don't pick it up asap, I see a lot of wins in your ice cream!
